"And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead."
MLK
Ok, I can't hold it in any longer because there is something I am not understanding.
What is up with this Obama lovefest? I understand and agree that he is a good person. I understand he is a great speaker and has the ability to move people. And I understand that he is demonstrating the right family values. But thats as far as it goes. I do not understand the tears. I do not understand how people say the Dream has been fulfilled. I do not understand why everyone is in love with him.
I mean people are talking about him like he is the second coming. Well granted he can be a symbol of hope because of his path to the White House and I can partially understand that. BUT if your spiritual and religious beliefs are as strong as you say they are, then why are you falling all over the place for him. Christ is the only symbol of hope for man. Do you not remember in the bible when Israel cried and complained about wanting a king, and they got a man with flaws. Key word flaws. I am saying that everyone, myself included, needs to keep our eyes on Christ, and no man will turn our heads and make us cry. Follow no man, follow God.
I bet you are wondering if I am questioning your faith in God and Christ....Yes, I am. When God is in our lives the right way, we will then have hope and the knowledge that we can do all things. When God is in our lives the right way, we will not need any man. The bible says, Christ is the way, the truth, and the light.
Now I am not really knocking Barack, I am hopeful he can fix our financial crisis and put the U.S. on the track that it roamed off of after the Civil Rights Act passed. But in his campaign speeches, he is not saying anything new. Look at what Bill Cosby said a few years back. Look at what Tavis Smiley has been saying. Look at what Christ has said.
I've been talking myself for years, telling people they can have anything they want, and all they have to do is set their mind to the task and stop making excuses. The problem with most people is they are not willing to make any sacrifices to reach their goals. They expect handouts.
The celebrations are almost over. The inaugration will be big around the US for one reason. Around the globe for another reason. In the black community in the US, it is a symbol of hope, change, and the expectancy of an easier life. In the white community it is a symbol of change and some forgiveness. Across the globe it is a symbol of hoping the US changes its foreign policies and war mentality.
But once these celebrations end, then decisions will have to be made. Abortion? Economy? Iraq? Afghanistan? Global warming? Education system? Inner city crime? All issues that divide America.
Honestly, Barack has been telling you all this from the jump, and I guess this is worth celebrating a little bit...there are no more excuses! He proved that anyone can accomplish anything.
One last item; MLK's dream is quotes below in the I Have A Dream Speech. And it sums up my feelings. And I will not be satisfied or celebrate until that moment...
"There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: "For Whites Only." We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until "justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.""

Hi Thaddaeus,
I just wanted to leave a short comment. I agree with a lot of what you said here. But I also want to say that I was one of the millions who shed a tear during the inauguration of Barack Obama... simply because I was happy for him. Because I am living in a moment many people never thought they would see in their lifetime. That's it. At least for me. I had a discussion with someone here at work and he was suprised to hear me say that I do not understand why people are acting like this man is the second coming... I guess because I'm black and the man was white, that he 'expected' me to say something else. Aside from all the great values Obama DOES have, he is still just a man. I just wanted to leave that little comment because you said you don't understand the tears and I just wanted you to know that not everyone shed tears thinking the Dream has been realized... we are still a long way away with much much more work to do before the dream is realized.... some of us shed tears just because we were happy for him.
Bet you didn't know I was still visitng your blog now did you? I don't come daily, but I think your point of view on things is very interesting and I like to come back and see where your head is at from time to time. :)
