I almost forgot to add two critical events that happened in 1968:
Heidi Bowl - In November of that year, the Oakland Raiders were playing the New York Jets. Both teams entered the game with a 7-2 record. It was only 65 seconds left in the game, the Jets were up 32-29, and Oakland has the ball. Then out of nowhere NBC cut the game off at 7pm to show the movie Heidi! And all the football fans missed is one of the greatest comebacks in football history. The Raiders scored 14 points on 3 plays in 30 seconds to come from behind and win the game. So many people called NBC studios to complain, the studios circuit board crashed. People were calling newspapers, police, judges, etc to express their anger, it made the owner of NBC come on tv and apologize at 830pm that night! This got so much press that NBC altered their policy, so that all football games will be shown from beginning to end. And that's how it is today. Many say the Heidi Bowl brought football to the front of all American sports.
The Moon - All of the craziness in 1968 had one good event. The US first journey around the far side of the moom. This was Apollo 8. The astronauts were the first humans to see the far side of the Moon and planet Earth as a whole while reading from the book of Genesis.
